Asbestos Awareness Week Sunday 24 – Saturday 30 November 2019

18 October 2019

This Asbestos Awareness Week (24-30 November), we’re asking all Queenslanders to learn how to work safely with asbestos.

Before the dangers were known, thousands of asbestos-containing materials were used in domestic and commercial buildings, vehicles and plant including electrical switchboards and meters. As a rule, properties built or renovated before 1990 are likely to contain asbestos materials.

If you’re not sure if a building contains asbestos, it’s best to always play it safe and take the right precautions before starting any work.

When asbestos products are disturbed, broken, sanded or cut harmful asbestos fibres are released into the air, putting the health of yourself and others at risk. This includes using high pressure water on asbestos roofs, fences and walls.

We have a wide range of resources available, including guides and films, to help everyone from licensed asbestos removalists and professional tradespeople, to home renovators work safely with asbestos.

Healthy Lungs Forum

Exposure to occupational lung diseases can be prevented with the right controls.

Join us for the Healthy Lungs Forum as we explore how and why we must protect workers, particularly those in the asbestos removal, stonemasonry, construction and manufacturing industries, from exposure to occupational lung diseases.

With a strong focus on asbestos and silica, the program features a diverse mix of industry and safety regulator presentations, case studies and a panel discussion covering:

  • health risks associated with exposure to occupational lung disease contaminants
  • hazard identification and practicable control measures
  • the importance of health monitoring and selection of the right dust and fibre controls, including personal protective equipment
  • workplace obligations and compliance with legislative duties
  • strategies to influence safety behaviours and practices in the workplace.

You will also go into the draw to win a powered air purifying respirator, valued at over $1,900!
