Asbestos disposal can be undertaken at facilities run by local government as well as privately owned and operated disposal sites.
Before taking asbestos to a disposal site, we encourage you to contact the proposed site to confirm details, fees, waste tracking requirements and any special arrangements before attempting to dispose of asbestos.
Please also remember that asbestos is classified as a ‘regulated waste' under Queensland environmental legislation meaning that there are specific requirements that must be met when it is transported by anyone. More information on transporting asbestos is located on this website asbestos transport and disposal.
For coloured sand that is the subject of the ACCC recall, the waste levy (which only applies to the landfill operator) and waste tracking requirements do not apply.
When disposing of the material, it must be double bagged so that the contents cannot escape while being handled, and then transported to a landfill authorised to dispose of asbestos contaminated waste.
The sand must not be disposed of in the red lid general waste bin.
More information can be found at the safety alert.
